Fence and gate repair in Round Rock
A leaning section, a rotted post, a gate that drags, or boards missing after a storm? Text me a photo. I’ll help you find a local fence company to fix it.
OnHand Home is not a fence company. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the fence company for the work.
What the work involves
A fence repair is smaller than a new fence. The crew fixes what is broken and leaves the rest. That can mean replacing a few pickets, resetting a leaning post, rehanging a gate, or swapping one panel.
The first question is why it failed. A single broken board is just a broken board. A section that leans usually has a post problem at the base. Fix the cause, or the new boards will lean the same way next year.
A repair crew looks for rot where the posts meet the ground, loose rails, sagging gate hinges and split boards. They then tell you which parts to replace and whether the rest is worth saving.
Why Round Rock homeowners call for fence repair
- A section of fence leans after wind or heavy rain
- A post is rotten, cracked or loose at the base
- Pickets or boards are broken, loose or missing
- A gate sags, drags on the ground, or will not latch
- A tree limb or a vehicle hit the fence
- Rails are pulling away from the posts
- The fence is gray, flaking or peeling and needs stain or paint
- A City notice about a fence in poor condition
Repair, or replace the fence?
A repair costs less today. A replacement can cost less over time if the fence is failing everywhere.
- Repair a few boards Fine when the posts and rails are solid and the damage is local. Ask whether new boards will match the old ones in color.
- Reset or replace a post The fix for a leaning section. Ask whether the old post is rotted below ground and how the new one is set.
- Rehang or rebuild a gate A sagging gate often needs a new brace, new hinges or a stronger post. The post is usually the root problem.
- Replace the whole run When many posts are rotted, patching adds up. Ask for a repair quote and a replacement quote, so you can compare.
- Stain or seal A coat of stain slows weathering on wood. Ask whether the fence is dry enough, and who applies it.
What changes the price
Repair prices depend on how much is broken and why. Ask for each item priced on its own.
- The number of posts, boards, rails or panels to replace
- A minimum service charge for a small job
- Whether new boards will match the old color
- Whether the gate needs a new post, hinges or latch
- Access to the damaged spot, such as a side yard or a shared line
- Hauling away the broken pieces
- Whether stain or paint is included after repair
- Whether a tree or storm damage is part of an insurance claim
Questions to ask the fence company
Use these to compare quotes side by side.
- Why did it fail, and will your repair fix the cause?A repair that ignores a rotted post will fail again.
- Can you price the repair and a full replacement of that section? It lets you compare. Without both numbers, you cannot tell which is the better deal.
- Will the new boards match?New and old wood often look different at first. Ask what the company recommends.
- What is the minimum charge for a small repair? Many small jobs have a minimum. Ask before the crew arrives.
- How will you fix the gate so it does not sag again? The answer should include the post, the brace and the hinges.
- Will you haul away the broken pieces?Cleanup is not always included.
- What warranty is there on the repair?Get it in writing, and ask what it covers.
If the City sent a notice
The City of Round Rock requires owners to keep some fences in safe condition and good repair. This applies to fences that face a public street, park, school, library or government office, or a public drainage way visible from a public street. The City lists limits on leaning, on broken or rotted sections, and on missing posts, panels or pickets.
The City says a fence that does not comply must be repaired, replaced or demolished within 60 days of first notice, and repairs use materials similar to the original. For the exact rules, call Code Enforcement at 512-341-3329.
Shared fences
A fence between two yards touches your neighbor. Talk first, and agree in writing on who calls the company and who pays what. When the City adopted its fence maintenance ordinance in 2016, it said the ordinance did not apply to fences shared by two or more residential lots. Ask Code Enforcement whether that is still true.
I am not a lawyer, and I do not give legal advice on who owns a fence. If you and a neighbor disagree, a survey can show where the line is.
