Lawn care and mowing in Round Rock
Need the grass cut every week, or a lawn that looks tired and patchy? Text me what you want done and how big the yard is. I’ll help you find a local lawn care company.
OnHand Home is not a lawn care company. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the lawn care company for the work.
What the work involves
Lawn care covers two different jobs. The first is routine mowing. A crew cuts the grass on a set schedule, trims the edges, and blows the clippings off the driveway and walk. The second is lawn treatment: fertilizer, weed control, aeration, or new sod. Some companies do both. Many do only mowing.
Before you hire, decide which job you need. A mowing service usually quotes by the yard and the visit. A treatment plan is a set of visits spread over the year. Ask what each visit includes, and write down what you agreed.
For a mowing quote, a company needs the size of the lot, how often you want service, and whether there are gates, slopes or pets. Many companies want to see the yard or a map before they give a firm answer.
Why Round Rock homeowners look for lawn help
- You want weekly or every-other-week mowing without doing it yourself
- You are moving, traveling, or just done with weekend yard work
- Weeds are taking over the beds or the lawn
- The grass has brown or thin patches after a dry stretch
- The soil feels hard and water runs off instead of soaking in
- You want sod laid over bare ground or a failed area
- A new lawn needs a plan for its first season
- The yard has gone long and needs a one-time cleanup before regular service starts
Which lawn job do you need?
Pick the job first. It changes who you call and what the quote covers.
- Regular mowing A repeating visit to cut, edge and blow off hard surfaces. Ask whether bagging, trimming around beds and trash pickup are included.
- One-time cleanup The grass is tall or the beds are overgrown. A first cut often takes longer than later visits, so ask for a separate quote.
- Fertilizer and weed control A treatment visit, not a mowing visit. A company that sprays weed killer may need a state license (see the Texas notes below).
- Aeration A machine pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn so water and air reach the roots. It suits hard, compacted soil. Ask whether the company has the machine or rents one.
- Sod New grass laid in rolls. It needs bare, prepared soil and steady watering at first. Ask who prepares the ground and who waters.
What changes the price
Lawn prices depend on the yard and the scope. Ask for a written scope with each quote so you can compare them.
- The size of the lawn and how much of it is turf versus beds
- How often you want service. A repeat schedule is often quoted differently from a one-off visit.
- Slopes, fences, gates and tight access that slow the crew down
- Whether edging, blowing, bagging and haul-away of clippings are included
- Whether fertilizer and weed products are included or billed on top
- Whether the lawn is overgrown on the first visit
- Sod type and how much ground prep is needed, for a new lawn
Questions to ask the lawn care company
Use these to compare quotes side by side.
- What exactly is included in each mowing visit?Edging, blowing and trimming are not always included. Get the list in writing.
- Do you carry liability insurance and workers’ compensation?A crew member or a mower can damage a window or a sprinkler head. Know who pays.
- Do you apply weed killer, and who holds the license?Texas requires a license to apply pesticide for hire. Fertilizer alone does not need that license.
- What mowing height will you use?Cutting too short stresses the grass. The City of Round Rock and Texas A&M both advise mowing high.
- What happens when it rains or the grass is too wet?Find out whether the visit moves or is skipped, and how that changes billing.
- Is there a contract, and how do I cancel? Some companies bill monthly with a notice period. Ask before you agree.
- Who waters new sod, and for how long?New sod can fail if the first weeks of watering go wrong. Round Rock also limits watering days.
Watering rules that affect your lawn
The City of Round Rock sets year-round limits on outdoor watering. When I checked on October 24, 2026, no drought stage was in effect. Under the year-round standards you may water on your designated day or days, and only before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Your day depends on the last digit of your street address.
The City also says water waste is always prohibited. Rules can change if a drought stage starts, so check the City water page before you set a timer.
Grass height and soil, in plain terms
The City tells homeowners to mow high and never cut more than one third of the leaf blade at a time. For a bermudagrass home lawn, Texas A&M AgriLife recommends a height of 1 to 2 inches with a rotary mower.
AgriLife also advises a soil test at least every other year before you pick a fertilizer. Ask a lawn company how they choose a product. A test tells you what the soil needs.
Round Rock and Texas notes
- The City of Round Rock limits outdoor watering to your designated day or days, before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. under its year-round standards. Check the City water page for the current stage.
- Texas requires a Texas Department of Agriculture license to apply any pesticide to lawns, ornamentals or weeds for hire. A business that applies only fertilizer does not need that license.
- The City lists a Healthy Lawn Rebate for core aeration and compost, and a Soil Test Rebate. You must get your water bill directly from the City. Read the rules on the City page before you buy anything.
