Locksmiths and rekeying in Round Rock

Just moved in, lost a key, or want a smart lock on the front door? Text me what you need. I’ll help you find a licensed local locksmith and set up a time.

OnHand Home is not a locksmith. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the locksmith for the work.

What the work involves

Most planned lock jobs fall into four groups: rekeying, replacing, adding a smart lock, and making extra keys.

Rekeying changes the inside of a lock so the old keys stop working and a new key fits. You keep the same lock. It is the usual first step after you buy a house or when a key goes missing.

Replacing means a new lock or deadbolt. You do this when a lock is worn, loose, broken, or when you want a different style or grade. Ask the locksmith whether your door’s holes and edge fit the new lock.

A smart lock replaces the key or adds to it, with a keypad, a phone or a fob. The locksmith can install it and set it up with you. Ask what happens if the batteries die or the app does not work.

In Texas, a company that sells, installs or services locks, or that calls itself a locksmith, is covered by the state’s private security licensing.

Why Round Rock homeowners call a locksmith

  • You bought or moved into a house and do not know who has a key
  • A roommate, a contractor or a past tenant has a key
  • A lock sticks, jams, or feels loose in the door
  • A deadbolt that does not line up with the strike plate
  • You want every door on one key
  • You want a keypad or smart lock on the front door
  • You need extra keys made, or a key that is hard to copy
  • A door or frame got damaged and the lock needs to be replaced

Rekey, replace, or go smart?

Each fits a different goal. Tell me yours and I’ll pass it on.

  • Rekey The lock is in good shape and you only want to cut off the old keys. This is often the simplest fix. Ask if the locksmith can make all the doors work on one key.
  • Replace The lock is worn, damaged, or low quality, or you want a new look. Ask about the lock’s grade and warranty, not only its finish.
  • Smart lock You want a code for guests or a phone app. Check that it works with your door, and ask about the backup if power or the app fails.
  • A door problem, not a lock problem If the door sags or does not line up with the frame, the lock may be fine. A handyman or a door repair may be the better call.

What changes the price

Lock work has a few price drivers. Ask for the total price, in writing or in a text, before the locksmith starts.

  • Rekey or replace. Replacing includes the cost of the lock itself.
  • The number of locks. Many companies price per lock.
  • The lock grade and brand you choose
  • Smart locks: the lock’s cost and the setup
  • A trip or service-call fee, and whether it counts toward the job
  • Evening, weekend or rush visits, which often cost more
  • Special keys or high-security locks, which can take longer to cut

Questions to ask the locksmith

Use these to compare quotes side by side.

  1. What is your Texas Department of Public Safety locksmith company license number?DPS regulates locksmith companies in Texas. You can ask for the number and check it with DPS.
  2. Where is your business based, and what is the business name on the license? The FTC warns that some locksmiths in listings may not be local at all.
  3. What is the total price for my job, including any trip fee?Get the number before the work. Compare it with the quote on the phone.
  4. Do you rekey all doors to one key?It saves you carrying a ring of keys.
  5. What warranty comes with the lock and with your labor? They are often different. Ask for both.
  6. Will you ask me for ID or proof I live here?A good locksmith checks. It protects you, too.
  7. What do I do if a smart lock’s battery dies or the app fails? You need a backup way in, such as a key or a code.

If you are locked out right now

OnHand Home is not an emergency service, and I cannot promise how fast anyone can come. If you are locked out, call a locksmith directly.

The FTC says to do the research before you need a locksmith, and to save the number. Look for a company based near you. If someone is in danger, or a child or pet is locked in a hot car or house, call 911.

How to check a locksmith’s license

The Texas Department of Public Safety runs the Private Security Program. DPS says that advertising as a locksmith without a DPS locksmith license counts as acting as a locksmith company and is a violation of the Private Security Act.

DPS lists a Search Licenses tool on its Private Security pages. Ask the company for its license number and look it up. If the company does not show up, call DPS before you hire.
