Drain cleaning in Round Rock
One slow sink, or every drain in the house? Text me which, and what you already tried. I’ll help you find a licensed local plumber to clear it and find out why it clogged.
OnHand Home is not a plumber. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the plumber for the work.
What the work involves
Drain cleaning clears whatever blocks the pipe so water flows again. The plumber first works out where the block is. A clog in one sink is a different job from a block in the line that serves the whole house.
Plumbers use a few tools. A snake or auger is a cable that breaks through or pulls out a block. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the pipe. A camera inspection puts a small camera in the line so the plumber can see what is there. Ask which one the plumber plans to use and why.
A clean-out is an access point on the drain line. If your house has one, tell the plumber where it is. If you cannot find it, say so. The plumber will look.
A good visit ends with a cause, not only a clear drain. Ask what blocked it and whether it will come back.
What people see
- One sink, tub or shower that drains slowly or not at all
- A toilet that clogs again and again
- Gurgling from a drain when another fixture runs
- Water coming up in a tub or shower when the washing machine drains
- A kitchen sink that backs up after dishes, especially with a disposal
- A bad smell from a drain that does not go away
- Several drains slow at the same time
One fixture or the whole house?
This is the question that sets the job. Tell me which it is.
- One fixture. A single sink, tub or toilet that is slow or blocked usually has a block near that fixture. The plumber can often clear it from the fixture or from a nearby access point.
- Several fixtures. The City says all drains in a home flow to the same sewer line. If several back up together, the block may be further down the line. Say so when you text.
- Keeps coming back. A drain that clogs every few weeks needs more than another snaking. Ask for a camera look at the pipe.
- Sewage in the house. If it is backing up inside, stop using water. Then see the sewer line repair page and text me.
What changes the price
Drain work is priced by the visit and by how hard the block is. Ask for the price before the plumber starts.
- The visit fee, and whether clearing the drain is included
- How many fixtures are affected, and how far down the line the block sits
- The method: snake, hydro jetting, or a camera inspection
- Whether a clean-out exists, or the plumber has to pull a toilet to get access
- Whether the plumber finds a damaged pipe and recommends a repair
- The time of day you call
Questions to ask the plumber
Use these to compare quotes side by side.
- What is the Responsible Master Plumber’s license number? The Texas plumbing board says to verify the license and insurance before you hire.
- Where do you think the block is, and how do you know?A plumber who can point to the evidence is easier to trust.
- Which method will you use: snake, jetting or camera, and why?The method should fit the clog. Ask what happens if the first one does not work.
- Is the price for clearing the drain or for the visit? If the block is farther down, you want to know what changes.
- Will you put a camera in the line?It shows the cause, not only the symptom. Ask whether it costs extra.
- What caused this, and what should I change?Grease, wipes and food scraps are common. A root or broken pipe needs a different fix.
- If it clogs again soon, what do you do?Ask in writing, since coverage after a drain visit varies.
What to keep out of your drains
The City of Round Rock has clear advice for households. Do not pour grease down the drain. Collect it in a container and put it in the trash. Scrape food scraps into the trash and use a strainer in the drain.
Do not count on a garbage disposal or hot water. The City says disposals only shred solids, and hot water and dish soap do not dissolve grease. The grease cools and can clog the pipe farther on.
Flush only toilet paper and human waste. The City says to throw wipes away, even ones sold as flushable.
If sewage is coming up now
Stop running water in the house. Keep children and pets away from the area. The City of Round Rock lists a wastewater emergency line at 512-218-5555. OnHand Home is not an emergency service.
Round Rock and Texas notes
- The City of Round Rock’s “Cease the Grease” page says grease does not belong in drains and that the garbage disposal does not solve it.
- The City’s wastewater page says all drains in a home flow to the same sewer line and that only toilet paper is made to break down in the pipes.
- The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners says to always hire a licensed plumber and does not regulate prices.
