Water heater repair in Round Rock

No hot water, a puddle by the tank, or a heater that has started to rumble? Text me what you see. I’ll help you find a licensed local plumber to look at it.

OnHand Home is not a plumber. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the plumber for the work.

What the work involves

A water heater repair starts with a diagnosis. The plumber works out what is wrong and tells you whether it is a repair or a replacement. Most homes in Round Rock have a tank heater in the garage, a closet or the attic. Some have a tankless unit on a wall.

The first question is gas or electric. A gas heater has a burner and a vent. An electric heater has no flame. The label on the side of the tank says which one you have. A photo of that label helps the plumber bring the right parts.

Many plumbers charge a visit fee before they start. Ask what it is and whether it counts toward the repair. Ask for the price of the repair before the work begins.

If the repair is close to the cost of a new heater, the plumber should say so. That is a good time to ask for both prices side by side.

What people notice before they call

  • No hot water at all
  • Hot water that runs out fast, or never gets as hot as it used to
  • Water around the base of the tank, or drips from a pipe on the side or top
  • A rumbling, popping or hissing sound from the tank
  • Rust-colored or cloudy hot water, with clear cold water
  • A gas heater where the flame keeps going out
  • A pipe near the tank that runs or drips water onto the floor
  • A tank that looks older and has started to rust at the bottom

Repair, or time to replace?

The plumber makes the final call. These are the questions that decide it.

  • Where is the water coming from? A drip from a fitting or a pipe can be a repair. Water that seems to come from the tank itself is a different story, so tell the plumber what you saw.
  • How old is the heater? The label or the serial number shows the age. The older the tank, the more a repair is a bet.
  • Has it been repaired before? A second or third repair in a short time is a sign to compare against a new heater.
  • What does the repair price against a new one? Ask for both numbers in writing. Then you can decide with the full picture. See the water heater replacement page if you lean that way.

What changes the price

The price depends on what is wrong and how hard the heater is to reach. Ask for the repair price before the plumber starts.

  • The visit fee, and whether it counts toward the repair
  • Gas or electric, and the part that has failed
  • Where the heater sits. A heater in a tight attic takes longer to work on than one in a garage.
  • Whether the plumber has the part on the truck or has to order it
  • Whether the work needs a City permit, which the plumber should tell you
  • Water damage around the heater, which is a separate job from the heater itself

Questions to ask the plumber

Use these to compare quotes side by side.

  1. What is the Responsible Master Plumber’s license number? The Texas plumbing board tells homeowners to get this name and check the license and insurance in its public search.
  2. What do you charge to come out and diagnose, and is it credited if I go ahead? It is the cost you pay even if you walk away.
  3. Is this a repair or a replacement, and why?The reason tells you whether the plumber is looking at your heater or at a sales target.
  4. Can I see both the repair price and the replacement price? You compare on the same page, and you can decide at your own speed.
  5. Do you need to order a part, and how long does that take?No hot water for several days is a real cost. Plan for it.
  6. Does this job need a City of Round Rock permit? The City lists standalone plumbing and gas test permits. Ask whether this job needs one and who applies.
  7. What do you cover on the part and on your labor if it fails again?Ask in writing. Parts and labor are often covered separately.

If you smell gas

Leave the house right away and call 911 from outside. Do not text me first. Do not use a light switch or ring a doorbell on the way out.

If the tank is leaking now

Keep people and pets away from hot water on the floor. If you know where the cold water shut-off valve to the heater is, you can close it. If you are not sure, close the main water valve for the house.

Then text me. OnHand Home is not an emergency service. I cannot say how soon a plumber can come, but I can start looking.

Round Rock and Texas notes

  • The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners says to always hire a licensed plumber. It also says it does not regulate prices, so compare written quotes.
  • The City of Round Rock lists standalone permits for plumbing and gas tests. Ask your plumber whether your repair needs one.
