Gutters in Round Rock
Gutters that overflow, sag or drip behind the fascia? Text me a photo of the problem and the length of the roof edge. I’ll help you find a local gutter company.
OnHand Home is not a gutter company. I help you find one, and you get their business name before you agree to anything. There is no charge for my help. You pay the gutter company for the work.
What the work involves
Gutters catch rain at the roof edge and carry it to downspouts. The goal is simple: get the water away from the walls and the foundation. Most gutter work is one of four jobs: cleaning, repair, replacement, or adding guards.
Cleaning removes leaves, seed pods and grit from the trough and checks that the downspouts run clear. Repair re-hangs a sagging run, reseals a leaking joint, or replaces a damaged section.
A new system starts with measuring the roof edge. The installer chooses the gutter size, the number and spacing of downspouts, and where each downspout discharges. That last choice matters most for your yard.
Many roofers also do gutters. Some companies only do gutters. Ask whether the person quoting is the person who will install.
Why Round Rock homeowners call about gutters
- Water pours over the front instead of reaching the downspout
- A gutter that sags, pulls away from the house, or has a visible gap at the joints
- Plants growing in the trough, or a downspout that does not drain
- Stains or peeling paint on the fascia board behind the gutter
- Water pooling next to the foundation or running into the flower bed
- A roof replacement, and the old gutters are dented or no longer fit
- Leaves from an oak tree fill the gutter again within weeks
Clean, repair, or replace
- Cleaning only. Fits when the gutter hangs straight, holds water without leaking, and just fills with debris.
- Repair. Fits when a few sections sag, a joint leaks, or one downspout is crushed. Ask for the repair price and the replacement price.
- Replace. Fits when the gutters are rusted through, bent in many places, or the fascia has to be redone anyway.
- Guards. A cover over the trough keeps out leaves. Small debris can still get in, so guarded gutters still need a look from time to time.
What changes the price
Gutter jobs are priced on the length of the edge and the number of corners. These factors move the price.
- Total length of the roof edge and the number of outside and inside corners
- Single-story or two-story, which changes ladder and safety work
- Continuous gutters formed on site, or sectional pieces joined together
- Gutter size and the number of downspouts
- Downspout extensions, splash blocks or buried drain lines to carry water away
- Whether the old gutters are removed and hauled away
- Fascia or soffit boards that need repair before new gutters go on
- Gutter guards, if you add them
Questions to ask the gutter company
Use these to compare quotes side by side.
- Are these continuous gutters formed on site, or sectional pieces?Continuous runs have fewer joints to leak. Sectional gutters have more joints to seal.
- What size gutter and how many downspouts are you quoting?Too few downspouts is a common reason for overflow in heavy rain.
- Where will each downspout discharge?EPA says gutters should be long enough to drain water at least 5 feet from the foundation. Ask how they do that.
- Will you check the fascia boards behind the old gutter?Rot hides behind gutters. Ask what happens if you find it, and who fixes it.
- Does the price include removing and hauling away the old gutters?Cleanup is not always in the quote.
- How often will a guarded gutter still need cleaning?Ask about oak leaves and small debris specifically.
- What warranty covers the material and the installation, separately?Get both in writing and ask who to call if a seam leaks.
Where the water goes matters more than the gutter
A perfect gutter that dumps water beside the foundation causes trouble. EPA says water pooling around the foundation of a house can lead to indoor moisture problems. Its guidance is to make sure the drain gutters carry rain water at least 5 feet away from the foundation.
FEMA suggests lengthening the run of downspouts with rigid or flexible extensions. It also says to avoid sending water onto a neighbor’s property.
If water keeps pooling near the house after you extend the downspouts, the grade may need work. That is a foundation and drainage question. See the foundation repair page.
Cleaning and oak trees
If oaks overhang the roof, expect more debris and more frequent cleaning than a house with no trees nearby. I will not give you a schedule. Check after leaf drop and after a big storm, and ask the company how often they suggest for your trees.
Wet leaves hold water against the fascia. That is how fascia boards rot. Fix the clog before the board goes soft.
Notes on drainage
- EPA’s mold guidance says drain gutters should be long enough to drain rain water at least 5 feet away from the foundation.
- FEMA’s flood guidance says to lengthen downspouts with rigid or flexible extensions to disperse water away from the home.
